Earth & Space

In the Earth, Space and Environment gallery, guests will explore our place in the cosmos and the connections between Earth and sky, and between Earth and humans – how space affects the Earth and how we affect the Earth.

How is Earth unique? How is it similar to other worlds? Exhibits and visualizations will explore ways humans are changing the Earth, and how everyone’s activities can in some way have an affect on Earth’s environment. Earth is part of a grand cosmic environment, that our world is not an isolated system – the energy and elements we use on Earth have come from stars, events in distant space can affect us, and even small actions of ours can have an impact on our planet.

To see the “big picture” systems and cycles that make Earth come alive as a dynamic and changing planet will be a fascinating and unique opportunity. We look at our home world as astronauts see it, as a whole planet floating in the blackness of space. Appreciating that perspective is the first step toward environmental awareness.

MAGIC PLANET – A large translucent globe serves as a spherical screen as the centerpiece of the Earth room, presenting images of the Earth as seen from space today or changing over many weeks and years, using real satellite data to visualize the living planet.

3D GALAXY – A “holographic-like” cube presents realistic 3D visualizations, based on real astronomical data, allowing visitors to “move” around the Galaxy at hyper-speed velocity viewing our location within the Galaxy and our Galaxy’s location within the larger universe.

OUR SPACE IN SPACE – See the Earth as the astronauts experience it floating high above the structure of the Space Station doing repair work.
