Technology, Style & Art
Design is the practice of mashing up – materials with form, aesthetics
with function – all in service to producing a solution to a particular
problem. It is also about seeing, making and exploiting connections. These connections
might be between and across fields, viewpoints, experiences, cultures, materials
and ideas, even across time (the past and the future).
Music, art, science, design and culture are the product of “mashups,”
intersections, or juxtapositions of ideas. Some of the newer genres of music
are the result of the recombination of elements from a range of influences.
Modern art is in some instances a mashup of found objects, traditional media
(e.g., oil painting) combined with the piece appearing in an unexpected location.
The desired outcome of both of these mashups is more often than not about communicating
ideas or provoking discussion.
ICONIC
ART – Be inspired by Dr. Walter Tschinkel’s nest-casting
pieces – plaster casts of ant nests (image right) – that show the
beauty and complexity of natural systems.
How can we apply its features in design and architecture?
ANIMATION STATIONS – Stop dreaming and start creating.
Animate fear using
a handful of beans or “pull off your shorts” using objects you brought
with you to help launch your filmmaking career.
DESIGN YOUR OWN VIRTUAL WHEELS – Select an aerodynamic
profile, customize your rims, and pick a colour. How does it measure up to other
creations? Test it out and keep tinkering.
