the New Facility

Making the Right Move

Where to Move?

Beginning with 80 potential sites and narrowing the choice to 22 possibilities, detailed analysis were commissioned of five possible alternative sites.

Designed to become a new hallmark in Calgary’s city profile, the new TELUS World of Science – Calgary will be a stunning architectural stand-out.

Twice the size of the current facility, the new building will boast 153,000 square feet of space set upon an 18-acre parcel of land located in the heart of Calgary, just north of the Calgary Zoo at the intersection of Deerfoot Trail and Memorial Drive. It will be easily accessible by public transit, car, bike and even by foot.

The new science centre will achieve a Gold LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) Certification. Some of the initiatives being undertaken to achieve this are:

  • A full remediation of a brownfield site;
  • Setting the building further back from the Bow River than required;
  • Reclaiming trees displaced by construction for future transplant;
  • Incorporating a 4-acre outdoor science park;
  • Using advanced systems to capture and use storm water for such functions as the flushing of toilets;
  • Provisioning of mechanical heat recovery inside the building;
  • Adding high-performance building information systems and low maintenance technology systems;
  • Using radiant heating panels in the floors and ceilings;
  • Installing lighting control systems with occupancy sensors.
