New interactive exhibit now open! Designed for ages six and up.

eyes on earth mission kioskHave you ever wondered how images of earth are captured from space? Or how meteorologists follow fierce hurricanes? Or how scientists monitor the effects of global warming? In Eyes on Earth, TELUS World of Science – Calgary’s newest exhibit, you’ll learn about Earth Observing Systems (EOS) and how these devices help us see the world in different ways.

Eyes on Earth is an interactive exhibit that explores three EOS elements: Satellites, Orbits and Satellite Technology.

In Satellites:

  • Explore components of a satellite and design your own
  • Discover EOS missions that highlight global issues currently studied by scientists via satellites
  • Put together satellite puzzles at two stylized workstations

In Orbits:

  • Launch marbles on a specially designed orbit table to learn about different types of orbits
  • Learn how satellites map the earth by sending a polar satellite spinning around the earth
  • Follow a satellite path while you learn about the relative distance a satellite must be from the earth

In Satellite Technology:

  • Study how scientists gather data to map oceans and ocean temperatures, which helps them to understand how oceans affect the weather
  • Measure ocean temperature and create ocean maps by using pixels to create an image
  • Try blocking UV rays using your hand, sunglasses, sunscreen or objects of your own
  • Monitor the Earth at a satellite data station using images from the Earth Observing System satellites
  • Observe how distance affects the amount of detail in satellite images and how NASA scientists use close-up and wide-angle images to accomplish different scientific goals
  • See how important lens size and aperture is to the detail and clarity of a satellite image
  • Create images with a hands-on pin board while learning the importance of resolution and pixels in imaging
  • View an image gallery of data and renderings taking from various EOS’s 3
  •
