Program Details

Spring Break camps run Monday, March 29th to Thursday, April 1st and Monday, April 5th to Tuesday, April 6th. Registration for camps has begun.

Monday, March 29th - Construction

Age Description

3 to 4

(Half-day camps)

Me the Builder: Have you ever wanted to build a tower that is taller than you?  Using different materials and trying different ways to build, work together with your fellow campers to build tall things, long things or strong things! 

5 to 6

(Half-day or full-day camps)

Build It!: Campers will explore different materials that make construction sites safe while experimenting with how to construct their own building.  Using ordinary tools and materials, campers can discover what makes a construction site work!

6 to 8

Design It!: Become a fashionista as you design a new look!  Use color, light, technology and textures to help inspire you to create the newest fashions, using the most unusual materials.  Will you design a dress made out of CD’s or an outfit using only recycled materials?  Discover the joys and challenges of design!

7 to 9

Machines: Medieval to Modern: Travel back to a time of drawbridges, water wheels and alchemy.  Build your own catapult and launch paint balls!  Test how those machines work compared to the machines we use today.  Can you make something that would work better?

9 to 11

Engineering Ambitions: Become a Civil Engineer for the day!  Design and build structures that will measure and test weight, height and strength.  Towers, bridges and roller coasters will be the focus today as you discover the strongest structures within them. How will your structures be unique?

 

Tuesday, March 30th - World Culture

Age Description

3 to 4

(Half-day camps)

Colour Kaleidoscope: Our world is full of fantastic colours and bizarre shapes.  Experiment by creating your own colours and use found objects to make amazing creations.  Look around our natural world to find what inspires you and compare shapes found in nature to structures people have made all around the world! 

5 to 6

(Half-day or full-day camps)

Around the World: Kenya: Imagine going to the savannah plains and jungles of Africa, without having to worry about lions!  Enjoy the experience of African drumming, dancing and mask-making.  Africa is home to some of the greatest athletes too; see if you can beat some of the fastest Olympic times!

6 to 8

Around the World: Russia: Travel around the world without ever leaving Calgary!  Explore Russian music and dance, and discover the secrets behind Russian egg painting - just in time for Easter!  Did you know that Russia put the first satellite, dog and man into space?

7 to 9

Around the World: Romania: Explore mysterious Romania without leaving the city!  It is the birthplace of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and many other vampire legends.  Create your own vampire persona, experiment to make fake blood and wounds, and discover the truth behind vampire lore.

9 to 11

Robots, Electronics, and Gadgets: How do robots and other electronics work?  What are they used for in countries around the world?  How can we build our own gadgets?  This day will focused on exploring cool technology from around the world and even building some of our own!

 

Wednesday, March 31st - Biology

Age Description

3 to 4

(Half-day camps)

Animalopolis: Have a hilariously good time with all sorts of animals from the film “Animalopolis”!  Whether you are prancing like a long-legged gazelle, looking at our live bee colony, or making your own animal tracks, campers will go wild over this animal adventure.  Plus, watch the film on our giant Discovery Dome screen!

5 to 6

(Half-day or full-day camps)

Walk With Dinos: Do some dino dancing while discovering how these giants may have looked and moved. Have fun working together with your fellow campers to unearth treasures of the past!  Plus, campers will be treated to a showing of the feature film “Dinos Alive” on our giant Discovery Dome screen.

6 to 8

Wacky Wild Animals: Can you camouflage like a chameleon?  Which animal has the longest tongue?  Can elephants jump?  What is the most endangered animal in the world?  Discover the most exotic and extreme animals, and explore their world with movement, sounds, and colour.  Plus, get up close and personal with our live animals!

 

7 to 9

Discovering Dinos: Travel back in time to when giants ruled the Earth!  Campers will explore the different types of dinosaurs that roamed the Earth, design their own classification systems, and hypothesize about where these great creatures went.  Dig for bones and fossils through the science of paleontology.  Plus, campers will be treated to a showing of the feature film “Dinos Alive” on our giant Discovery Dome screen.

 

9 to 11

Lab Rats: Have you ever wondered why living things look and act the way that they do?  Be a biologist for a day as you reveal banana DNA, dissect owl pellets, and record the behavior of live insects and reptiles.  Explore the living world like never before!

 

Thursday, April 1st - Movement & Sounds

Age Description

3 to 4

(Half-day camps)

Spring into Spring!: Outside the world is growing, just like you, so come celebrate spring with us!  Discover the sights and sounds of trees, plants and bugs during Springtime as we go on a creative investigation of the world around us.

5 to 6

(Half-day or full-day camps)

Story Science: Can you build a house that the Big Bad Wolf can’t blow down?  Can we find a way to keep Humpty Dumpty from breaking?  Using these children’s stories and more, we’ll explore creativity, engineering, science and of course, story-telling!

6 to 8

Musical Theatre: Have you ever wondered what goes into creating a popular Broadway hit like The Lion King or Fiddler On The Roof?  Now you can create your own musical extravaganza!  Bring your singing, dancing, directing and design talents to help create a smash hit!

7 to 9

Hilarious Humans: Discover the most fascinating animal on the planet… you!  The human body is wacky and weird and downright amazing!  Using math, logic, and art skills, find out all about your physical self and discover a few secret tricks your body can do too!

9 to 11

Sound Waves and Voices: Make some noise! Discover how instruments make different sounds, including your own voice!  Discover the art of Audio Engineering with sound artist Jeff Read.  Explore different sounds in his “sonic park”, find out how to manipulate sounds with a synthesizer, and mix your own music to take home on CD!

 

Monday, April 5th - Matter

Age Description

3 to 4

(Half-day camps)

Matter Matters: Begin to discover why matter matters!  Explore the different states of matter: solids, liquids, and gases – test out how each one looks, feels, and acts.  Build a dam to discover how liquids move, blow bubbles to test gases, and see if you can turn a liquid into a solid, and then back again!

5 to 6

(Half-day or full-day camps)

Magic and Illusions: You are in for a magical day as we learn about the business of tricks.  Explore optical illusions and even try your hand at making your own!  Plus, check out the science behind some magic tricks and learn a few to mystify your friends and family!

6 to 8

Grossology: Be prepared to get your hands dirty in this camp dedicated to things that are stinky, crusty, slimy, and just plain gross!  We will check out a worm compost, paint with blood, build mazes for beetles and even design a garbage sculpture!

7 to 9

Crazy Chemistry: Stir, mix, meld, combine, blend and merge in this explosive day of hands-on chemistry experiments!  Witness cool chemical reactions and learn how different substances combine to give unexpected results.  Come to this day camp to mix up some fun!

9 to 11

3, 2, 1… Blast Off! (Beginner): Explore the explosive side of rocketry!  Ignite your curiosity with simple rocket science.  Build your own model rocket and watch as you launch it over 500m into the air (take home model rocket for each camper value of $30).  Scheduled family launch with the Calgary Rocketry Association will be on Saturday, April 10thth, weather permitting, at the dry pond area in Marlborough Park.

Tuesday, April 6th - Astronomy

Age Description

3 to 4

(Half-day camps)

Hike Through the Sky: How do stars make the shape of a bear, a princess or a dragon?  The sky is a great place to find some fantastic stories.  What is a constellation and why are they up there?  Join in a live Discovery Dome theatre performance to explore our amazing sky, plus create your own constellation and discover the many amazing things in our solar system!

5 to 6

(Half-day or full-day camps)

Stars and Seasons: Look up!  What do you see?  Come celebrate the sky with us as we look at how the Earth moves, discover where the stars go in the day time, and why we have four seasons in Canada.  You will even get some inter-galactic travelling tips as we participate in a live theatre performance in our Discovery Dome Theatre!

6 to 8

Out of This World!: Go on an adventure through the galaxy as you meet an astronomer, make a life-sized alien and find out how old you would be if you lived on Mercury!  Discover what you need to survive on another planet and what other dangers are out there.  Experiment to find out what happens when you are in the vacuum of space or in a place as cold as Neptune.

7 to 9

Spy Science: Become a sneaky spy operative.  Design and build a device to see around corners, and learn to send secret messages without being intercepted.  Campers can experiment and discover a few tricks of the trade to start their own spy kit.  Plus, become a junior astronomer as you explore how telescopes can help us spy on other parts of the galaxy!

9 to 11

3, 2, 1… Blast Off! (Intermediate): This Intermediate rocket camp will blow you away!  Campers should have taken the Beginner course or be comfortable with more complex rocketry to take this course.  Build your own model rocket and watch as you launch it over 500m into the air (take home model rocket for each camper value of $30).  Scheduled family launch with the Calgary Rocketry Association will be on Saturday, April 10th, weather permitting, at the dry pond area in Marlborough Park.

No refunds will be given for cancellations processed after March 15th, 2010. 

Pre-and Post-Program Supervision

Pre-and post-care supervision is available for registered camp participants from 8:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Please register for Pre-and Post-Program Supervision when booking camps for your. If children are left unattended after 4:10 p.m. they will be placed in this service and you will be charged for proper supervision.

Pre-Program Supervision: $4.00/child per day

Post-Program Supervision: $4.00/child per day
